How to pray?

I'm not sure how to do it in hinduism and I'd really appreciate any advice. I suppose I'd see it as more of some sort of meditation more than anything else - is that ok? I hope it is, please do share your perspectives if one should view it differently. I'm ready to change my views on it. I just want to feel a deeper connection to the divine. I was raised catholic (which is in my opinion a form of child abuse, at least that's what my experience was like) and there, it's all pretty straightforward. I'm just not sure how to do it now, as a convert. Also, how do I know which God to pray to? I'm sorry if my questions, and this one in particular, are dumb. I certainly do not mean to be disrespectful, I am just very new to this. Thank you.
