Suspended indefinitely for replying to colleagues concerns about airlines room sharing policy- now stuck in financial and mental health crisis.
I work as a cabin crew for an Indian airline that enforces a mandatory room-sharing policy for layovers. This means we are required to share hotel rooms with colleagues, regardless of personal comfort, safety concerns, or past incidents. Many crew members have raised valid concerns about this policy: • Lack of privacy and rest—different sleep schedules lead to exhaustion. • Personal safety risks—if something goes missing or an incident occurs, both people could be held accountable. • Hygiene concerns—not everyone has the same standards of cleanliness. • Risk of conflicts or uncomfortable situations—especially if there are personality clashes or prior disputes. • Serious security risks—if an illegal or prohibited item is found in a shared room, both crew members could be held responsible, even if one is completely innocent. This concern is especially alarming because this airline has had a history of smuggling incidents involving crew members. With this room-sharing policy, my safety—and the safety of civil aviation—is at risk. If an individual chooses to engage in illegal activity, their innocent roommate could be falsely implicated just for sharing a space. This is not just an employee issue—it is a serious aviation security threat. Beyond safety, this policy also affects our basic dignity and well-being. As cabin crew, we operate 12-13 hour flights and arrive at layovers exhausted, sweaty, and covered in grime. But instead of being able to shower and unwind, we have to wait for our roommate to finish using the washroom—still sitting in our dirty uniforms, feeling sticky and uncomfortable. To make things worse, many hotel bathrooms at international destinations don’t even have proper locks, leaving us feeling even more exposed and unsafe. But here’s the worst part: I have been suspended for over 120 days simply for replying to colleagues in a private WhatsApp group where we were discussing these concerns. I never badmouthed the company, never incited any action—just responded to an ongoing conversation. Yet, the management singled out seven of us and suspended us indefinitely with no explanation, no end date, and no proper communication. Not only are we jobless, but we are also financially trapped. We are being paid only ₹10,000 per month—barely enough to survive. And despite having no work, we are not even allowed to leave our base stations. I live alone in Delhi, and my rent alone is ₹16,000. My savings are gone, and I am severely depressed. I have begged the management to at least let me return to my hometown, where I can stay with my family, but they have refused to even consider it. How is this fair? How is this even legal? They have taken away my job, my financial security, and my ability to even go home and be with my family in this time of distress. All because I participated in a conversation. I never expected that simply replying to a discussion would lead to me losing everything with no explanation. How is this acceptable? Has anyone else faced something like this at their workplace?1
