Unsafe in the City - Women Story
Today, I experienced a disturbing encounter while traveling by bus from XYZ to Delhi. A man in his 30s sat next to me and initially struck up a harmless conversation. However, his demeanor quickly shifted, and he began asking invasive and personal questions. As we approached my destination, I attempted to extricate myself from the conversation. To my surprise, the man followed me off the bus, insisting on carrying my luggage despite my protests. He then asked me out for coffee, which I declined, prompting him to raise his voice. The situation escalated, and I felt increasingly uncomfortable. What's more alarming is that he somehow obtained my Instagram handle and began messaging me. I'm compelled to ask: why do some men engage in such behavior? Is this a pervasive issue in Delhi, or was this an isolated incident? As a woman, I shouldn't have to feel unsafe or anxious in public spaces. While it's easy to suggest taking immediate action, the reality is far more complex. I'd like to pose a question to the men reading this: how would you respond if you witnessed or experienced a similar situation? What actions would you take to ensure the woman's safety and comfort?3
