Tipping is no longer optional, I feel
Today, I tried to book a cab to my home from Nizamuddin Railway station at 4:20 in the morning. It usually costs 280 via cab and 220 via auto. The experience I had made me think if was really in Delhi. I first booked Uber cab. The price shown was 220. Waited for couple of minutes but nobody accepted my ride. Switched to uber auto. Price was 200 and same fate there. Fir jo nanga naach chalu hua, I can't express it. I tried Uber XL and even uber priority but no luck. I was asked to add tip because drivers were not accepting ride. Added the tip, selecting the highest value possible. One driver accepted. I took a sigh of relief but he cancelled the ride after a while. I then switched to rapido. Booked cab first because auto was showing 400. No one accepted. Added a tip, none. Increased the tip by 30, none. Another 30, none. I kept on adding the tip until the last option. No one accepted. Switched to auto. I felt cheated being charged 400 for an auto but I had no option left. I didn't want to go directly. I booked the auto. To my surprise even they didn't accept it. One part of me wanted to stop trying and go directly but as I had no other option, I added tip on the top of that 400. I felt like being mocked. Nobody accepted that. I was tired of standing outside the railway station. All this time, I was constantly being approached by local autowalas. But finally I accepted one and paid 500. It was at 5:10 am. Many of you might bring customer ratings into this so I'll tell you my rating. 4.61 uber and 4.5 rapido. Also, I don't understand how this rating works. I never had any argument with any driver so far. Will always be ready with my luggage even before the driver arrives. And always a thank you after the ride ends ( sometimes it might skip my mind, so read most of the times). The only reasons I could think of is not tipping them or pay directly to the app (instead of cash). I often tip when I feel that the fare is okay for me or it is lower than what I expect but I wouldn't like to tip when it is being shoved to my throat . Why would I tip you when I am already being charged higher than my usual price? I don't know whom to blame, the auto and cab drivers for forming a cartel and denying all the rides or the apps for not regulating this behaviour. The condition in tier 2 cities are worse. They upfront ask for additional money. I don't see the situation getting any better sooner.1
