Scammed at AIIMS Gymkhana. Seeking help in identification of culprit.
**Date: 5 Dec 2024** A friend participated in an inter-ministry badminton match at AIIMS Gymkhana, where several people from different Ministries were present. During his match (around 10:00 AM), he left his bag, containing his phone and wallet, at the seating area like everyone else. **10: 50 AM** After his match, he found his iphone missing. With the help of a colleague, he called his number, and surprisingly, a man answered. The man apologized, claiming he had mistakenly taken the phone and promised to return it within a few minutes. What began as "a few minutes" stretched into over an hour, leaving my friend increasingly anxious. He kept calling, and while the man always picked up, he sounded annoyed and insisted he was on his way. The man introduced himself as "Punit Sharma from MHA" (a name we believe is fake) but refused to share his phone number. He kept blaming traffic and eventually claimed his "driver" would deliver the phone. He also asked for an alternative contact number for coordination. **02:30 PM** Soon after, an auto driver arrived at AIIMS Gate No. 1 with a yellow envelope containing the phone. The auto driver explained he had been handed the phone by a stranger under the Ber Sarai flyover and assumed there was some medical emergency. While relieved to get his phone back, my friend felt uneasy about the entire situation. He checked his bank accounts using a friend’s phone and discovered a ₹1 lakh UPI transaction made to *Champalal Jewellers at* ***11:30 PM***. Devastated, he spent the day filing online complaints and following up with the cyber cell and police. Later that night, he realized his credit card was also missing. Another transaction was discovered—this time at the same jeweler for a pair of gold coins worth ₹1.40 lakh. The next day, we visited *Champalal Jewellers* in South Ex Market 1 and managed to retrieve CCTV footage of the culprit. This is a warning to everyone: please stay vigilant about your belongings. If anyone recognizes the person in the footage, please help us identify him. **Note**: friend's Screen lock and UPI Pin were same. **TL;DR** Friend’s phone was stolen during a badminton match. The thief claimed it was a mistake and returned the phone via an auto driver. Meanwhile, ₹1.40 lakh was siphoned via UPI and a stolen credit card to buy gold coins at Champalal Jewellers, South Ex Market 1. CCTV footage of the culprit is available—seeking help with identification. https://preview.redd.it/v0dnvlsbtk7e1.jpg?width=1599&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=02c518c76a558a57365b2c3bc28a8131f0a6b7b8 https://preview.redd.it/1uaueksbtk7e1.jpg?width=1599&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=639ca96177b26ea3c4d92fc854f19ca3eb87a193 https://preview.redd.it/ienrd8sbtk7e1.jpg?width=1599&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9c0dc16a490537896743f7c8360f02b7e937dde7 https://preview.redd.it/v2xb78sbtk7e1.jpg?width=1599&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=74ca9b1d947ba44ceae0cc2ddd4c9f48801876c22
