Roast my app idea: would you use an app to connect with groups in Chennai based on your interests?

To give some background, I find it ridiculously difficult to find like minded peeps in university or the city. People who are equally obsessed about tech, making video games, starting a musical band together or even pixel art. And the rare ones who share my sense of humour have the audacity to live so freaking far away like Bengaluru or abroad. The loneliness is real, but why should it be this hard to make new friends? So here's the app idea: you join a (geofenced) community like Chennai, and you can create niche channels and other people can join these groups. These groups can be like "gamedev chennai", "alwarpet community", "real estate news", "music covers", etc. One might also create short lived groups to find gym buddies, or promote open mic events. Groups can be public or request to join. People can use these groups to make new friends, get help on finding the best dance class nearby, find design events to attend and so on. Basically like reddit but with sub-subreddits. (I think reddit is actually experimenting with a channels feature now) What do guys think of this concept? Would you sign up such a platform? Or are group chats too cringe? What would a better approach to solve the actual problem? Would love to brainstorm and hear your opinion1
