Good customers
Hi makkale, We really have to talk about this. I don't know if it's a Chennai thing or Indians in general but I see a lot of people having a "superiority" complex of being customers, especially to the north Indian workers. We've often heard the phrase "Customer is always right", this doesn't mean a customer can act as if the service providers are inferior. We have a renovation going on at our place, and the person working on it has messed it up a bit. And I was talking to him as to why it happened, and why the measurements were not properly taken beforehand (apparently, the one who took the measurements has messed up, leaving out some considerations of few tile skirtings, not going into the details but it would require full replacement). And I asked him to rectify it without any extra charges and within the time specified. I was not rude, didn't raise my voice nor undermine the work, but I put my point across for the rectification to be done asap diplomatically and assured him that it would not affect his ratings provided that everything was rectified properly. Then came my family. I felt really bad with the way they talked to him. They held a condescending tone throughout the conversation and hanging over "I have paid this much for this work, and you cannot even do the basic things properly, how are you even getting contracts and how can you quote this amount for this quality of work", so on and so forth. I'm not sure if my family thought as though they were superior being the customers or not, but that is NOT how you talk to anybody providing a service to you. The worker assured me that the rectification will be done free of cost and within the timeframe even if it means working longer hours and skipping meals.I went to him, apologized for my family's reaction (which he thought was justified because he made a mistake) and asked him to carry on. Then I realized this happens a lot. I've often seen people undermine and unnerve the service providers unnecessarily be it, EB person, appliances service engineers, maids, or anyone else. I just wanted to put it out there, mistakes happen. Talk and get it fixed, negotiate the price or whatever. Just stop being condescending. That's not at all required. Peace.4
