Why the Cab and auto rickshaw driver ask for more money?

I was travelling from Guduvancheri to Airport. This cab guy demanded about 500 money above the shown price. I declined and same goes with autorickshaw driver. Somehow I found a decent cab driver after moving a certain distance. Is this behaviour due to my poor skills in Tamil Language or everyone faces this issue?
