Need advice - Transporting bike via train

I want to transport my bike to Kerala this week. I am planning to take it as a luggage with me in train. Should I do some kind of booking before hand? Is there anything that needs to be done before reaching station otherthan emptying the fuel tank and having the document copies. Boarding station would be Egmore.
