Is calling our chitthi as thotha common ? Is it a tamil word ?

I have a friend who calls her mother's younger sister 'chithi' as 'thotha' it's pronounced as tho-ith-tha, I'm just wondering whether if that's tamil or not and she's pure tamil brought up in chennai while her mom's side of family is from arcot
