As an "outsider" working in one of the more prestigious institutions in the city, it always amuses me when I see the whole "out with the outsiders" tirade on this sub from the "insiders".
I currently work at ISB Mohali, and have lived all across the country (and outside of it). Suffice it to say that I have seen my fair share of cultures, and people. And this outsider vs insider debate is something that gets a chuckle out of me every single time I see being spouted on this sub. I wouldn't expect much critical thinking from people who spout such rhetoric anyways, but I feel it's important to understand why outsiders in any culture come to a place. It's partly because there are some jobs which many "natives" of a place deem beneath them, and partly because they are not as qualified for some others. For instance, how many in this sub who complain about this incessantly would be cool with driving a cab, or working in a restaurant?? The vast majority of such jobs are done by people who are coming from outside, and were, for no fault of their own, born in less fortunate conditions. People complaining about outsiders ruining the culture have absolutely zero qualms in ordering food brought by "outsiders", or being waited upon in the fancy restaurants by " outsiders " (I repeatedly put outsiders in quotes because it is hilarious that there are folks who consider people migrating from a different state or even a different district as outsiders.) On the flip side, there will be plenty of people who'd like to study at, say, an IISER/ISB Mohali Or a PGI Chandigarh. Yet, the amount of "insiders" who manage to get into these institutions is miniscule compared to what should be expected from people born in one of the richer parts of the country. Education is just not as valued amongst the denizens, which is why you see so many "shortcuts" to success like diploma mill institutions claiming to send you to Canada in return for ₹₹₹ (where ironically, they'll be the outsiders now) So the next time you see people trying to play this blame game, and blaming everything wrong with the city on outsiders, ask them these pertinent questions. And wait for them to find their answers. Hopefully, most of it is coming from ignorance. But if not, chin up outsiders (rich or poor). Without you, no city in this world sees or has seldom seen growth.2
