The solution to all Indian peak hour traffic

Visited New Zealand for 2 weeks, and spent most days being driven around by my uncle to tourist spots. We drove on city roads, highways, dirt roads, in peak traffic, through busy intersections, etc. And i kid you not, I heard my first honk in NZ sometime well into the second week! Anyway, for those wondering, the above image relates to India (or entire South Asia to be fair). Why are we like this, and what do we gain to stand with all the incessant honking?!
