Are drivers from Pune a bit stupid?
(Might have exaggerated the title a little, but hope u get my point) I usually don’t travel to Pune, but yesterday I had to drive there with my dad. As we entered Pune via the expressway, I noticed a significant difference in driving habits between drivers with MH01-05 plates (Mumbai) and those with MH12-14 plates (Pune). It felt like many Pune drivers were just learning to maneuver their vehicles—showing little regard for others on the road. They didn’t seem to know the difference between overtaking and cruising lanes, drove with high beams on, and overtook from dangerous spots. One particularly close call near Sinhagad Institute stood out: a guy took a sudden U-turn while simply signaling with his hand. I was driving at 90-100 km/h, and it was only thanks to ABS that I managed to avoid an accident. Even within the city, I noticed a lack of awareness, especially among two-wheeler riders—no lane discipline, no sense of surroundings. It’s not my intention to rant or criticize, but this experience left me genuinely curious: Why is there such a cultural, economic, and mindset difference between drivers in Mumbai and Pune, despite the cities being geographically close and both being metro areas? I’d love to hear thoughtful answers and perspectives. PS: Please don’t turn this into a Mumbai vs. Pune debate. I’m genuinely interested in understanding the reasons behind these behavioral differences.3
