Bihari Pride - Contributions, History and criminal neglect
I regularly come across Biharis/others in daily life who are absolutely not aware of heritage of Bihar and its contributions to the world. It is absolutely criminal how little we are aware of our heritage, history and our contributions to the world. Just for context, 3 distinct periods of history when India has been a cultural and economic superpower, Bihar was the engine that propelled it forward. First the Mauryan period, then the Gupta and later the Mughal era. Mauryan era - Its hard to wrap your head around it but Chandragupta, Ashoka etc. were Biharis. Buddhism spread across the world and is a major cultural influnce across south east asia till today. The identity of India, Indian emblem, Indian flag is derived from Ashoka's symbol. Gupta era - Some of the best works out of India came during this period. Kalidasa, Aryabhata, Sushruta etc. were Biharis. Indian mathematics with its decimal system developed during this era is foundational to the world. Modern universities are a Bihari invention - Nalanda, Vikramshila, Ogdantpuri formed a network of universities that established the bedrock of how universities till today are modeled. Cordoba, Oxford, Cambridge were inspired by the Buddhist Universities. The ideas from Bihar (India) flowed west via Islamic empires took root and form such a foundational part of world's functioning. Mughal era - The prosperity of Mughal era India was based on the reforms of Sher Shah Suri from Rohtas. He organized the pattedari system for land management, started the postal service, built the GT road to facilitate trade, standardised the monetary system and gave it the name with which we know it today 'rufiyah'. All the pride of western countries is built on the edifice that they civilized the world and they have made major cultural, economic contributions. Heck, they even justified their empires on it. If they would have had even a quarter of the contributions of that of Bihar alone they would have rubbed that on everyone's face each day. I find it beyond perplexing that instead of looking at Bihar and by extension UP, Bengal as well as an opportunity, everyone just decides to discriminate against Biharis. It is just is our criminal lack of pride, awareness in our own history and achievements that is the culprit. We just can't think beyond our dream for sarkari jobs and filling our pockets at the expense of others that is the culprit. Even on this sub, I see RJD laltendharis, BJP andhbhakts, JDU paltan brigades, who are out to prove each other wrong. Maybe its centuries of poverty that has stifled even our imagination that we can't even imagine Bihar being an economic and cultural force similar to a South Korea or UK or that of Silicon Valley. We were that force, multiple times historically, we have just given up.3
