Has ripping off/cheating others, greed become normalised here in namma Bengaluru?
Am guessing this problem is not just in Blr but India wide, heck I would say even a world-wide problem. Greed, trampling over others to get ahead, cheating etc. Sigh, what has this world come to?! One problem in India is the lack of consumer protection and swift remedial action against errant vendors. I am aware that the present Govt at the center is moving in the right direction with regard to strengthening consumer protection and that these things take time to evolve. Anyway, my husband and I are in Blr on a longish stay as my m-i-l is aged and not keeping too well. The blatant attempts to take advantage of her by all and sundry simply beggars belief. Starting from the auto drivers (demanding Rs 80 to go less than 400 meters - from home to Doctor's clinic on the main road); dentist, Airtel etc.. the list is endless. Latest episode in this never ending ripping her off saga was her regular dentist (now ex-dentist). She developed a severe toothache and so I took her to this dentist. He is apparently very "renowned" and operates from a well known clinic in a suburb called Indiranagar. He is rated very highly by 100's of " very happy and satisfied" patients, go figure! This smooth talking, snake-oil type salesman dentist examined her teeth (not many to begin with!) and grandly pronounced " your mother is in crisis " Her bridge is broken and would need to be removed; 7 teeth in her upper jaw would need extraction and replaced with implants (probably 14 in all, yeah right) in the upper jaw and lower jaw. Treatment would take 1 1/2 months. Just fyi, m-i-l is 86! I asked him why not dentures but he was pretty insistent on selling her implants and finally said ok, implants in the bottom jaw and denture for the upper. Then he proceeded to show pictures of one of his aged happy client who has seen him for 30 years. I stepped out of the clinic for a bit and called my own dentist for an appointment. This dentist practices in a neighbouring suburb called Domlur, just a couple of kms away. I had got some work done there in 2023 and was very happy with the result. So I took m-i-l there right away. And guess what, her bridge is perfectly fine and not broken. No mention of any teeth extraction, in fact was reluctant to do any unnecessary extraction unless absolutely necessary (X-say showed a calcified canal and tooth will be extracted only if root canal not possible). Started her on a course of antibiotics and scheduled for a root canal today. This dentist also recommended dentures over implants. Thank God for the good humans who still exist albeit as rare as hens teeth! PS: Pain is considerably less today.5
