Correct and legal way to change name in Passport

Hello friends, my passport is due for renewal this year. I want to change my name this time around by simply removing the middle name and only keep the first and last names. I have made this change already in PAN Card, Aadhaar Card and Voter's ID card which wasn't very difficult. But I believe the process to make this change in the passport is not so straightforward. Could anyone who has undergone this process please guide me on what is the correct and the legal way to simply remove middle name from the passport? Does it require any police verification too? How much time does the whole name change process take? Looking for your guidance on how to proceed with this.
