Why is there so much self-hate on Indian subreddits?
Hey everyone, I'm from Norway and have been living in India for almost a year now. I absolutely love it here. The country is so alive, full of energy, and progressing at an insane pace. But what I admire the most is how India has managed to keep its incredibly ancient culture alive while modernizing at the same time. There are, of course, things that need improvement—just like in my own country—but overall, India is an amazing place with a deep sense of history and identity. That’s why I’m honestly a bit shocked by what I see on Indian subreddits. I don’t follow any, but Reddit keeps pushing them onto my feed. And every time I check, it feels like it’s just people tearing down their own country. I see posts mocking Hindu traditions, ridiculing events like Kumbh Mela, or hating on someone just for being proud of their regional identity (like chanting a Maharashtrian slogan). Meanwhile, there’s constant glorification of the West, as if everything there is perfect. I get that Reddit is mostly atheist/liberal, and it naturally leans critical. But this doesn’t feel like normal criticism—it feels like an outright rejection of your own culture. And it’s weird because, from an outsider’s perspective, India is one of the few places that’s managed to modernize *without* losing its roots. Most of the world is struggling with cultural erosion, but India still has a strong sense of identity. So why is it that on Reddit, so many seem embarrassed by it? I’ve also noticed that if anyone defends India or its traditions, they get downvoted or called names. Like, isn’t it possible to acknowledge flaws *and* still be proud of your heritage? Constructive criticism is one thing, but this constant negativity just seems excessive.2
