What are your opinions on open ended movies?
Just watched No Smoking—got me thinking about abstract films that leave you to make sense of what you just saw. Most mainstream films—whether Hollywood or Indian cinema—tend to spell everything out with all the subtlety of a bull in a china shop. And I get it—movies are often about escapism, and not everyone wants to watch rewatch a movie to understand it. But I have huge respect for directors who trust their audience enough to let them connect the dots on their own. I’m not saying that a movie has to be abstract to be great. Lord of the Rings or Star Wars are as straightforward as good vs. evil gets, and we can still admire their technical aspects of it and enjoy the simple good triumphs evil story. But I can’t help but respect filmmakers who risk everything to tell a story that will only resonate with a niche audience knowing that it probably will be a commercial failure. I just feel like they’re in the business to really express themselves and not just to earn money - which I feel is the main point of art. I’d love to hear your recommendations for similar movies, especially from Bollywood.2
