Pretending to be Sri lankan

Hi, I am a Canadian with an odd situation. My father is South Indian but left my mom when she was pregnant I am half white but look more South Indian. Unfortunately, I never got to learn much about India's culture but I did pick up things here and there. Love the cuisine Now Iaml traveling South East Asia full time and I noticed a bit more judgement towards indian people in certain areas. unfortunately, a minority has given us a bad rep. I think I want to just say I'm half Sri Lankan instead.. Do you think anyone could tell? I am fairly dark skinned and am mixed after all. Thanks in advance
