"Is the Overhype of Korean Culture in India Creating Unrealistic Expectations and Divides Among Youth?"
I've been noticing a lot of debates on Instagram and Reddit lately about how Korean culture is creating a weird divide between Indian men and women. As a woman who genuinely enjoys K-dramas and K-pop, I want to share my perspective. I started watching K-dramas back in 2017. The chemistry, the stories, and the rom-com vibes hooked me because I’m a rom-com girlie at heart. I grew up watching Barbie movies, Christmas rom-coms, and the old romantic Shahrukh Khan era, so action movies or thrillers don’t really appeal to me. K-dramas became my thing purely because I love lighthearted, feel-good stories. But let’s get real here: liking K-dramas or K-pop doesn’t mean I’m obsessed with Koreans or want to be part of their culture. My type isn’t tied to any race or nationality. I’ve also seen how some Koreans openly hate on India, and yet, some teenage girls here blindly romanticize everything about Korea. Like, seriously? At least have some self-respect! Not everything shown in a drama is real. Toxic relationships exist everywhere, including in Korea. At the same time, boys need to chill out and stop bashing girls who watch K-dramas or listen to K-pop. It’s just a form of entertainment. Judging someone for their taste in movies, music, or shows is immature. Everyone has their preferences—there’s nothing wrong with that. On the flip side, girls, let’s stay grounded. K-dramas and K-pop are great for entertainment, but they’re not reality. Stop living in a delusion and understand that no one—be it Korean, anyone else—is a fantasy come to life. Put yourself first. Appreciate your culture, your individuality, and your worth. Both boys and girls need to stop dragging each other over this nonsense. It’s fine to enjoy Korean or Japanese content as a hobby, but we need to know where to draw the line. Stop expecting people to act like your favorite K-drama character. Live in the real world, embrace your roots, and enjoy entertainment for what it is—entertainment. Let’s be real and respect each other’s choices without making it toxic. What are your thoughts? Let’s discuss!4
