How can I help the animals in India when I'm there?

I will be visiting India next year, and I've been warned by the people I'm going with there is going to be a lot of visible suffering and they're worried I won't be able to handle it. I'm hoping if I can help it will make me feel better? How can I help when I'm there? Do I buy food and feed it to the strays? Can I take strays to the vet if they're injured or is it best to just donate? Also my limited googling confuses me on whether I should donate to beggars; some sites say don't donate to children as it could be a scam. Is this true? Can I donate to beggars or is it best to just buy them food and donate to charities? Thank you
